WORK OBJECTIVE:
This is paraprofessional work assisting the professional civil litigation staff in the Office of General Counsel. Considerable discretion and independent judgment are exercised in the preparation of legal documents, pleadings, discovery, subpoenas, and trial notebooks. Work is performed under the general direction of the Deputy General Counsel and is reviewed through observation, conferences, reports, and evaluation of results achieved.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such duties are a logical assignment to the position.
• Prepare drafts of initial pleadings, discovery documents, motions and other legal pleadings and papers relating to litigation.
• Communicate with employees and witnesses to gather information relating to discovery and ongoing investigation.
• Provide assistance to the general public as well as various departments relating to responses to subpoenas, documents demands, etc., and/or preparation of legal documents.
• Assist attorneys preparing for trial.
• Trial preparation includes scheduling testimony of witnesses and experts, gathering relevant information, issuing trial subpoenas, reviewing subpoenaed documents and preparing trial notebooks.
• Prepare drafts of other legal documents such as affidavits and responses to subpoenas.
• Request and review medical records.
• Prepare medical chronologies.
• Schedule depositions, pre-trial conferences, and independent medical examinations.
• Retain and communicate with various expert witnesses.
• E-file pleadings in both Federal and State Supreme Court and file other documents in Buffalo City Court, State Supreme Court, the Appellate Division, and the Erie County Clerk’s Office.
• Research various social media platforms.
• Ability to navigate video surveillance software.
• Organize and maintain materials in the Law Library.
• Perform a wide variety of tasks for the department on an as-needed-basis.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Knowledge of federal, state, and local statutes and ordinances, the common law, and administrative rules and regulations. Extensive writing skills, including the ability to prepare legal pleadings, discovery, legal documents, briefs, motions, and other legal correspondence. Knowledge of legal publications and ability to keep such publications organized and up to date. Enhanced communication skills, including the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with members of the legal profession, employees, court officials, medical personnel, experts, witnesses, and the general public. Ability to prioritize and work in a deadline driven, fast-paced environment. Excellent technical and computer skills. Proficiency in or ability to learn the Microsoft Office Suite or comparable applications, (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook). Must display attention to detail, excellent judgment, and the ability to handle issues and information in the most confidential manner.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds).
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is performed in usual office conditions with rare exposure to disagreeable environmental factors. This position is on site and there is no option to work remotely.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
An Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies, or a related field, and three (3) years of experience as a paralegal, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Some medical background preferred.
