Under the direction of the Manager, Bus Maintenance and Equipment, this is a professional position responsible for the technical, managerial / administrative work with regards to the direction and operation of the Bus Maintenance Department. Duties include identifying new and required technologies and methods, compiling, and analyzing data on such technologies and methods and revising existing work practices and projects to accommodate such subjects, technologies, or methods. This work involves the planning and monitoring of vehicle, equipment and facility projects and outside services. Assignments are made orally, or in writing and work is reviewed through observation or results obtained, meetings and reports.

The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such duties are a logical assignment to the position. • Prepares specifications, formal and informal, for the procurement of vehicles, equipment, and supplies. • Administrates all aspects of various procurements including inspections to ensure with compliance to the specifications. • Researches, develops, evaluates new technologies and coordinates integration with legacy equipment and systems to promote service needs, efficiencies, and smooth transitions. • Manages outside contractors for technical and contractual compliance. • Conducts assessments of vehicles, equipment, and facilities to identify needed upgrades, improvements, and repairs. • Participates in the selection of and managing work of consultants and contractors. • Initiates and monitors contracts for required outside services. • Assist in the reporting requirements to various agencies including but not limited to: FTA, NYPTA, NYSERDA, NYSDOT, NYSDEC, EPA, and ABBG. • Provides fiscal management to ensure proper utilization of financial resources. • Assists Manager with capital budgets for vehicles, facilities, and equipment. • Develops job related knowledge, skills, and abilities. • Performs additional duties as required.


Knowledge of the necessary past, current, and future techniques, methods, procedures, principles, practices, codes, rules, and regulations with regards to vehicle, equipment, and facility management. Knowledge of specification writing. Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment. Knowledge of cost and billing procedures used in vehicle, equipment, and facility management. Knowledge of all phases of vehicle operation. Knowledge of the capabilities, care and limitations of vehicles, equipment, and facilities. Knowledge of all safety requirements regarding vehicles, equipment, and facilities, inclusive but not limited to: FTA, NYSDOT, NYSDEC, EPA, NFPA. Ability to present programs and ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, superiors, and the public.


Tasks involve the ability to exert light/heavy physical effort in sedentary to light/heavy work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light/heavy weight (5-50 pounds).


Work is performed in usual office conditions and in bus maintenance areas with typical physical demands and exposure to disagreeable environmental factors.


Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Technology, plus seven (7) years of relevant transit experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education; three years of responsible experience in maintenance and repair, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
