Under the direction of the HSEQ Director the primary role of this position is to assist the HSEQ and Airfield Operations departments in the monitoring, operation, and optimization of the BNIA Wetlands Treatment System (WTS). In addition, this role will support NFTA Environmental requirements including site environmental inspections, support SEQR reviews, environmental response activities, and other project related environmental requirements

• Operational assistance and understanding of the WTS.
• Responsibility for the performance and health of WTS including compliance with stormwater discharges.
• Provide and be provided technical guidance for maintaining equipment and evaluating WTS conditions. • Ensures compliance with stormwater discharges associated with system and operations.
• Assists in data investigation for all environmental media.
• Collaborate and assist with other HSEQ staff to support NFTA operations with regards to chemical inventories, HSEQ audits, and hazard communication.
• Performs additional duties and tasks as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Basic knowledge of the principles and applications of physics, chemistry, and bacteriology. Ability to develop and utilize hydrologic models and cost optimization models. Ability to read, understand, and record data from gauges, scales, meters, and control systems. Ability to perform laboratory and field tests for various environmental media and authority operations. Ability to work independently of supervision and work with outside consulting and/or Authority personnel as a part of a team. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Mechanical aptitude. Alertness and dependability. Must be able to respond to call-ins during off duty hours and work irregular shifts as required.
Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of medium weight (25-50 pounds).
Work is performed in both an office environment and in the field with potential exposure to chemicals, noise and physical stressors. Due to potential environmental hazards, Personal Protective Equipment will be worn as required.
An Associate in Applied Science degree in chemistry, biology, or a related field (An Associate of Arts degree with 30 credit hours of math or science is considered equivalent), plus a minimum of one (1) year experience in environmental, safety, wastewater treatment plant work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be able to obtain and maintain a SIDA badge.
