WORK OBJECTIVE:
This position involves the preparation, performance and completion of any type of assigned work normally done in the Train Control Department at any location connected with the operation of the company's rail system.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such duties are a logical assignment to the position. • Must be willing to work with a minimum of supervision and have the ability to perform the assignments given to him by the Supervisor. • Must fully understand the basic principles, methods or procedures applicable to the maintenance and repair of: Phase Selective track circuits, Digital Transmission Systems, Real Time Computer Control and Monitoring Systems, Switch Machines, Way Side Signal Systems, Audio Track Circuit Systems, Carborne Control Systems, and vehicle to Wayside Transmission Systems. • Must be able to understand and be proficient in the use of complex test equipment, including but not limited to Oscilloscopes, Digital Multi-Meters, Frequency Meters, Deviation Meters, Digital Probes, Semiconductor and Logic Test Devices, and specialized diagnostic test equipment. • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Must be able to demonstrate a high level of skill in reading cable diagrams, wiring diagrams, logic circuits and schematics. Must be able to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing. Must be able to maintain an effective working relationship with supervisors and other employees. Must have a satisfactory prior work record.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of bending, squatting, reaching, kneeling, climbing ladders, twisting, rotating and/or crawling (under rail car). May also involve lifting (10-50+ pounds), carrying (10-50 pounds), pushing and/or pulling (5-50 pounds) materials and/or equipment. Job involves standing 3 hour at a time for four hours per day, sitting for one hour per day and walking one hour at a time for two hours per day.
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
60% of time is spent inside, 40% of time is spent outside, exposing employee to natural environmental conditions. Work exposes employees to fumes, dust, gases, odors and mist. Employee is also exposed to noise, vibration, hazards (slip and fall, chemicals) and motorized vehicles.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have one year of formal training in basic electrical/electronic theory, including digital logic, analog logic, integrated circuitry and CRT circuitry and three years’ experience with industrial/ commercial maintenance in troubleshooting and repair of modern Electrical/Electronic systems. To be an eligible candidate for the position, all candidates will be required to pass the Skills test designated for the position. Employee must be able to possess and maintain a valid New York State Driver’s License of the classification required by law for the type of vehicle(s) driven as part of an employee’s normal job duties. Employees must be able to pass certification for operation of rail vehicles. Must be able to wear and utilize any and all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Participation in the Bloodborne Pathogen Program is required.
