WORK OBJECTIVE:

Works under the direction of the Manager, Facilities Maintenance and the Maintenance Facilities Supervisor, works at a variety of NFTA facilities performing a variety of typical carpentry installations and maintenance tasks. Performs all functions of carpentry including assisting in major building projects and maintenance of the NFTA properties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such duties are a logical assignment to the position. • Designs and erects office partitions using both wood and steel studs • Installs and finishes drywall, wall coverings, ceilings, assorted furnishings using wood and plastic laminates • Assess structural building repairs, minor repairs to overhead doors, and a variety of maintenance related functions and making repairs as needed • Assists other tradespersons in a variety of maintenance related functions • Records time and material data as required within the computerized work order system to departmental procedures • Estimates jobs, both labor and materials; when requested, researches and identifies appropriated materials; secures quotations in accordance with NFTA purchasing procedures; writes purchase requisitions for supervision • Makes recommendations regarding materials, specifications and application procedures as required • Provides hands-on coordination of work orders requiring direct involvement with Engineering, FMD staff personnel, users and tenants • Works independently of supervision to ensure that work is accomplished properly and in a timely fashion • Frequently performs the duties of a lead person on various projects involving multiple tradespersons • Performs painting tasks as required • Must be able to weld up to 3/8” • Perform additional duties as required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Must be familiar with building codes and accepted construction techniques, able to read and interpret blueprints and drawings. Must have demonstrated proficiency in all carpentry areas (i.e. roof installation and repair, cabinet making, rough erection and trim work). Must have good communication skills and be able to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions. Must be willing to respond to call-ins during off duty hours and work other shifts as required. Must be in good physical condition with the ability to work from ladders and in confined spaces as well as outdoors in all types of weather. Must hold safety as very important. Must be willing and able to work independently to complete the assignments listed above.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of bending, squatting, reaching, kneeling, climbing (steps, ladder), twisting (upper body), rotating (upper body) and/or crawling (5-10 feet). May also involve lifting (20-40 pounds), carrying (up to 30 pounds), pushing and/or pulling (50 pounds) materials and/or equipment. Job involves standing four hours at a time for six hours per day, sitting one hour at a time for two hours per day and walking for two hours per day.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

50% of time is spent inside, 50% of time is spent outside, exposing employee to natural environmental conditions. Work exposes employees to fumes, dust, gases, odors and mist. Employee is also exposed to noise, vibration, hazards (moving conveyors) and motorized vehicles.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Proven and/or demonstrated ability to work largely independently of supervision to established procedures. High School or Trade School Graduate. Minimum (5) years proven experience as a journeymen carpenter. Valid NYS Driver’s License. Must be able to obtain and maintain a SIDA (Secure Identification Display Area) badge including CBP (Customs & Border Patrol) seal and access.
