RAIL CAR MECHANICAL SPECIALIST

Reading and interpreting instruction sheets and blue prints; analyzing defects on rail car and shop equipment, parts and mechanisms; setting up machine tools and equipment; conducting tests; making repairs, replacements and adjustments; observing and reporting unsafe or irregular conditions.
The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. • Interpreting all instruction sheets, blue prints and wiring diagrams
• Identify defective, unserviceable or deteriorating conditions in mechanical systems, unit or parts; diagnose the cause of such conditions; and determine the extent of required adjustments, repairs and/or replacements.
• Test, repair or replace rail car mechanically or pneumatically operated systems or components, including but not limited to compressor, door and step components, truck and wheel assemblies, suspension and brake gear, gear boxes, couplers, pantographs and heating/air conditioning equipment
• Perform all types of complicated layouts and machine setups, as well as precision machine work on lathes, milling machines, shear, wheel lathe and grinders
• Perform all required acetylene burning, gas, arc and heliarc welding
• Perform periodic inspections and preventive maintenance on mechanical systems and component, and properly maintain records of same.
• Be able to make emergency repairs necessary to safely move a disabled or defective rail car or train in order to maintain service to the public with a minimum of delay and inconvenience.
• Perform all of the work assigned as duties for any jobs in subordinate or comparable classifications and perform all duties with a speed and accuracy satisfactory to Company management.
• Accept instruction and work assignments required to qualify for other classifications.
• Develop a knowledge of Company policies pertaining to the work involved.
• Explain, instruct and demonstrate to others all job details, methods and procedures when directed to do so by supervisory personnel.
• Employee must be able to possess and maintain valid New York State Driver’s License of the classification required by law for the type of vehicle(s) driven as part of an employee’s normal job duties.
• Perform other duties and tasks not stated above but which become part of this or any job as directed.
• Performs additional duties and tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Must have and be able to demonstrate an understanding or machine shop practice, and repair and welding techniques. Must be able to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing. To be eligible candidate for the position, employees will be required to pass the Skills Test designated for the position. Must have a satisfactory prior work record. Must be able to maintain an effective working relationship with supervisors and other employees. Employee must be able to pass certification of operation of rail vehicles. Must be certified under the Environmental Protection Agency (EPS) 608 and 609 certification for refrigerants. Must be able to wear and utilize all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Participation in the Bloodborne Pathogen Program is required.
Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of bending, squatting, reaching, kneeling, climbing (ladders), twisting, rotating and/or crawling (under rail car). May also involve lifting (10-50+ pounds), carrying (10-50 pounds), pushing and/or pulling (5-50 pounds) materials and/or equipment. Job involves standing 3 hour at a time for four hours per day, sitting for one hour per day and walking one hour at a time for two hours per day.
80% of time is spent inside, 20% of time is spent outside, exposing employee to natural environmental conditions. Work exposes employees to fumes, dust, gases, odors and mist. Employee is also exposed to noise, vibration, and hazards (slip and fall, chemicals)
Must be a high school graduate or have or GED. Employee must be able to possess and maintain a valid New York State Driver’s License of the classification required by law for the type of vehicle (s) driven as part of an employee’s normal job duties.
To be an eligible candidate for the position, persons who were not full-time Metro employees on or before December 16, 1996 will be required to pass the Advanced Comprehensive Skills Test selected for the position. IN ACCORDANCE WITH FEDERAL REGULATION 49 CFR PARTS 653 & 654, THIS IS A “SAFETY SENSITIVE” POSITION, SUBJECT TO DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTING. PARTICIPATION IN THE BLOODBORNE PATHOGEN PROGRAM IS REQUIRED.
